Welcome to our Peace Corps blog. This is intended for anyone interested in learning about service in the Peace Corps and for our family and friends who want to follow our journey. We anticipate a challenging and rewarding experience that we are happy to share.
First some background on who we are. Whitney and I met in graduate school at the University of Michigan and both finished our Master of Public Health degree in April 2010. We have different academic and professional experiences, but share an interest in service and cross-cultural learning. The Peace Corps is a natural fit for us as we now seek to apply our skills in developing countries. As relative newlyweds, we're also excited to share our early years together in such an intense and rewarding environment.
Next, you may want to know where we are at in the process. We applied in October of 2009 and interviewed just before Thanksgiving, with a follow-up interview from our regional recruiter at the beginning of December. After that, we waited through the winter and spring until receiving our official nomination on June 1, 2010. Our nomination was to Sub-Sahara Africa--I am health degreed, Whitney is health extension for June 2011. We received our medical packet within 2 weeks and all of our materials were received at the PC office on August 7, 2010. Within 2 weeks, dental was cleared for Whitney. I had to have an occlusal guard made by my dentist before receiving clearance (still pending). On November 10, 2010 we received a phone call from our medical contact at the OMS. She told us to look for a letter in the mail in a few days, because she was clearing us! Oh, happy day!. We've called the Placement Office, but they seem in no rush to give us our invitation. We spoke with someone on November 15 - she looked up our file and said they didn't need anything from us at this time (I offered updated resumes). That brings us to today - November 30. So far, nada. I'm hopeful we'll hear something back soon, but I guess only time will tell. This whole application process has been a huge test of our patience and desire to do this.
We promise to update as soon as we hear anything. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.
Look for pictures and videos to come after our departure!
